Fumo Basks in Snow Day
March 3, 2009 –
With yesterday’s fierce winter storm causing a day-long postponement of his federal corruption trial, former State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo took full advantage, frolicking in the snow in heartrendingly childlike fashion. “I haven’t seen him this happy in a long, long time,” confided Fumo’s girlfriend, Carolyn Zinni, peering outside to watch the embattled kingmaker build an adorably sloppy snowman. “This might be the last time he ever gets to play in the snow.”
Other Fumo confidants were similarly touched by the 65-year-old’s carefree jubilance. “The jury will begin deliberations tomorrow, so who knows if he’ll ever build a fort or make snow angels again,” said defense attorney Dennis Cogan, laughing as he dodged a Fumo-thrown snowball. “And I’m pretty sure there aren’t many opportunities to make S’mores in prison.” Fumo aide Jonathan Moretti agreed. “Vince called me this morning and goes, ‘Can we make cocoa and watch Scooby-Doo, Johnny? Can we?’ ” Moretti recalled, shaking his head sadly. “How could I deny him?”
Fumo, for his part, merely wanted to enjoy every moment of the late-winter nor’easter. “Snow days are just so fun,” he giggled, head bobbing as he ran haphazardly through the windswept powder. “Next, I’m gonna play with my G.I. Joes—Snow Job’s the coolest!” Such wide-eyed wonderment was nearly too much for Zinni. “You should’ve seen his face when he found out there was a snow day,” she said, pausing to wipe a tear. “He hasn’t smiled like that since… since the ‘O.P.M’ days.”
