December 22, 1979: Erving Earns Doctorate
76ers forward Julius Erving was all smiles at yesterdayÕs team practice, as he unveiled his recently-earned cardiological degree from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. ÒItÕs something IÕve been working towards a long time,Ó he beamed, hanging the framed document on a locker hook. ÒI just hope I can work my internship around our games, is the main thing.Ó
Sixers coach Billy Cunningham marveled at the starÕs myriad abilities. ÒItÕs amazing: heÕs the best player in the league; heÕs got his own shoe; heÕs even been in a classic movie [The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh],Ó he said, shaking his head in admiration. ÒAnd now heÕll be able to perform open-heart surgeryÑmaybe right there on the court, if need be.Ó Teammate Lionel Hollins was similarly effusive. ÒJulius is always tops at everything he does,Ó gushed the reserve point guard. ÒSo itÕs cool heÕs gonna keep his scalpels and whatnot under the bench, in case anyone ever has a heart attack.Ó
Benjamin Lintgen, of the universityÕs Cardiovascular Institute, meanwhile, warned against the rigors of both an 82-game NBA season and a postgraduate internship schedule. ÒThere will be times when Julius will be coming straight from a game against, say, the Knicks or the Bullets, and have to work an 18-hour shift,Ó he said from his West Philadelphia office. ÒInterning is always a bit gruelingÑbut itÕs doubly so if youÕve just been banging the boards with Elvin Hayes.Ó Erving, however, remained typically upbeat. ÒIÕm sure itÕll be tough, but right now? IÕm just happy to be done with the tests and the studying and everything,Ó he said, combing out his trademark afro. ÒJust call me Julius Erving: M.D. Or, you know, something like that.Ó
